Zero Box Lodge Porto
ZERO Box Lodge in Porto Portugal explores the capsule apartment concept with tiny soundproof windowless dorms called “Boxes”. Each uniform sleeping compartment is paneled in natural wood and comfortably accommodates just enough room for a queen-size bed and luggage, each is equipped with its own full-size bath. The halls of ZERO Box Lodge comprise rows of “boxes” each a perfect minimalist place to lay your head for the night.
The boxes were so comfortable, each a tiny womb-like space with soundproofing and blackout darkness, that the biggest downside was that it was far too easy to oversleep. The outside world feels far away if not non-existent and you sleep like a baby.
ZERO Box Lodge’s sleep pod-style rooms are conceptually intriguing but one of the coolest aspects of the hotel is its common spaces. On entry, you are received at reception where a giant fridge contains your room key (attached to a crisp beer).
The lobby is striking with modern art pieces that perfectly define the space, and the glass elevators are lit from the elevator shaft with moving lights so that you feel a bit as though you are in Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory as you ascend.
A top-floor shared space rounds out the experience, with a vast dining room, theatre room, and rec area where walls of natural light more than make up for your room’s windowless design. In addition, the hotel features an amazing library and an exquisite sauna.
Downstairs is where the moneys at… the Big Bad Bank is a restaurant and cocktail lounge where you can enter a real vault, lined with (fake) piles of cash. Each cocktail is names after an infamous bank robber.
Just above is ZERO Box Lodge’s rooftop which is quite literally its crowning attraction. A sculptural wading pool is adjacent to two “submerging tanks”, deep pools where you can don headphones and experience an underwater dance party.
Zero Box lodge brings the beach party to the rooftops of Porto, and this whimsical escape is unforgettable. The rooftop sports a bar, DJ booth and shaded sun beds.
