Hoposa Costa d’Or - Mallorca
There’s no better place to fully sink into a lazy Mediterranean holiday than Hoposa Costa d’Or in the perpetually sun-drunk Balearic Isles.
Hoposa Costa d’Or is an adults-only hideaway, unpretentiously chic in that particular Mallorcan way of low-key luxury, fitted agelessly into the precipitous Tramantura mountains that hug the cobalt coast of Mallorca.
Goats climb the trees just before the hotel entry. Bees and cicadas sing a summer chorus in defiance of the baking Mediterranean afternoon. Between the twin facades of the hotel, stone and stucco decked with climbing florals, the sea can be glimpsed where it falls dramatically below the dining terrace.
Hoposa Costa d’Or’s comfortable rooms occupy a historic structure courted by a newer addition, both centered around an ocean-facing panoramic terrace. With a full-service restaurant onsight and attentive concierge all the conveniences are there, however, it is the naturalness of the property that makes you feel most at home.
Mine is a corner room on the highest floor during my stay. Sheer curtains waft in the breeze gently flowing between windows. Outside, palms frame a cobalt view that stretches to the horizon. Even though the afternoon is baking hot, I cool off just long enough to unpack before heading out to explore.
Sandaled feet tread over the cobblestone courtyard making their way down, past a private tennis court following a cacti-stubled switchback that hugs the steep incline of Mallorca’s dramatic western coastline, finding their way at last, to a secluded swimming point.
That particular lull that descends between a summer afternoon and its evening, acts like a drug, blurring the hours between walking, sunbathing, and a swim in the sea. Before any time feels it has passed, the sun is low and beginning to cast the isle in deepest gold.
Daybeds with a delectable panoramic view give up their occupants as guests return to their rooms to refresh and dress for dinner. Evening light pools like melted butter between palm fronds and floral arbors. The sunset, like a well-timed symphony, executes a long drawn-out build for effect. It is not until the denizens of this coastal refuge have re-emerged and seated themselves to dine that the finale is cued.
Those last minutes of light seem to wring from the day every seemingly simple beauty, light transforming everything in breathtaking color, long holding the sky and world below in thrall before burning out in languid glory into the horizon.
In the wake of the sun’s dramatic farewell, the glow of twilight takes hold. Dinner guests on the terrace re-engage themselves in conversations that had been temporarily paused as the sky made all but the most oblivious its captive audience. Low and light laughter spills into the growing dark as glasses clink and conversation sinks deeper.
Linen quality is always that detail that takes a stay from lovely to decadent.
Words can’t fully capture the sensation of sliding between soft cool sheets into a pillowy end of a summer day drawn to its long lazy length. Hoposa Costa d’Or delivers this delectably simple pleasure, always notable because the importance of a truly delicious night’s sleep cannot be undervalued while traveling.
